Chapter XIII

Bingley’s confrontation with his sister that evening proved to be most unpleasant.

“Caroline, when did you become acquainted with Mr. Wickham? I didn’t know you had ever met the man.”

“We were introduced the other day.”

“Who introduced you?”

Miss Bingley found that she had no answer for a question she had not expected.

“I asked you a question, Caroline. Who introduced you?”

“No one introduced him to her, Charles.”

“Be quiet, Louisa.”

“No, Louisa. Please tell me what you know.”

Charles’ elder sister proceeded to relate their encounter with Mr. Wickham and how it was initiated by Caroline. Charles Bingley was not pleased at all at what had transpired that day.

“Caroline, did you offer to pay Wickham to hurt Miss Elizabeth?”

“No, I wouldn’t do anything like that. He was just to divert her attention, so she wouldn’t notice Mr. Darcy.”

“That is not true, Caroline. You definitely mentioned paying Mr. Wickham two hundred pounds to ruin Miss Elizabeth.”

“Is that true, Caroline?”

Miss Bingley just glared at her sister then sat quietly chewing on her lower lip and refraining from answering.

“Just what did you want done to Miss Elizabeth? Caroline, I demand an answer now!”

By this time, Caroline Bingley was totally exasperated and loudly told her brother,” He was to ruin her.”

“And how much were you willing to pay him to…ruin her?” Charles was thoroughly disgusted with his sister and determined that she would no longer be welcome at Netherfield, but he hadn’t decided what to do with her yet.

“Eight hundred pounds, and it would have been worth every penny…if he’d only done what he should have. I’m to be mistress of Pemberley, not that country chit.”

As Darcy entered the room, he said, “You will never be mistress of Pemberley, Miss Bingley. I wouldn’t marry you if you had a million pounds and were the most beautiful woman in England.”

“Mr. Darcy, I….”

“Not another word. Who I wed is my business and never was yours. Whether or not I marry Miss Elizabeth will be up to her and me. Your thoughts do not enter in at all. Personally, I would be most gratified if I never saw you again. I would never consider marrying a woman bent on harming another person.”

Turning to Bingley, Darcy continued. “Make a good decision concerning her fate, Bingley. If she and Wickham had succeeded in harming Miss Elizabeth, I’m not sure how I would have reacted. I have never wished a woman ill, but I may have made an exception for your sister. Gaol or transportation might have been too little punishment.”

Caroline’s jaw dropped as she gasped in shock at Darcy’s words. Then the tears began to flow.

“Your tears will do you no good, Caroline. I’m going to give you a choice: Aunt Mary’s in Scarborough, your own establishment in London, or I marry you off to someone who may or may not tolerate your hateful spirit. You have tonight to think about it. If you refuse to choose, then I will choose for you. Do you understand?”

His sister just nodded her head, wiped her tears, and blew her nose on her handkerchief.
